DIY: A Simple Date Night Jar

Hubby and I had been browsing Facebook when an article about making a date night jar came up. We read it and thought the idea was cute: write different dates on Popsicle sticks and pick from the jar when you need a date night. I immediately jumped on Pinterest to see if any other bloggers had come up with tutorials on their jars or ideas on how to organize the dates. There were several, most of which talked about categorizing your date ideas by how much you want to spend, whether you want to go out or stay home, how romantic you want it to be.

It all got a bit complicated for us. Too much Monica Gellar-esque organizing of the Popsicle sticks. So we decided to take the general idea and make our own.

You will need:

-A mason jar
-A cute tag
-Colored Popsicle sticks
-Washi tape
-A fine tip Sharpie

Ours is super basic. I categorized our Popsicle sticks into 4 categories...very basic categories...

-Dinner, Val's choice or Derek's choice
-Movie, Val's choice or Derek's choice
-Couch date (which consists of picking up a spread of nice snacks and binge watching a show or renting a movie)
-Wildcard, Derek's choice or Val's choice

I assigned each option a Popsicle stick color, labeled it with Sharpie on a piece of washi tape and stuck them in our mason jar.

The idea now is that when we decide to have a date night, one of us will close our eyes, pick a stick and go from there. If it's a couch date we will mutually decide on snacks and what to watch. If it's one of the other dates, specifics will be chosen by the respective choice maker. We figure this will be fun and a good way to make date night ideas easier (because we are TOTALLY the couple who goes back and forth with "what do you want to do?" "I don't know, what do you want to do?").

Plus, look how cute it turned out!

  1. Very cute idea! I love that you kept it simple instead of going all Monica on it :-)
